The fracture rate for adults living in long-term care is two to four times that of adults of similar age living in the community. Not only is there pain from the fracture site, but also the medications taken for the pain are often accompanied by delirium.
Strategies to prevent fractures, include taking vitamin D, calcium supplementation, the use of hip protectors and exercise.
Interventions to prevent falls should be tailored to each resident’s level of fracture risk and mobility, among other factors.
